When my son was deployed to Afghanistan in 2014, I realized that he went to war almost exactly seventy years after his grandfather, and they were both promoted to staff sergeant while deployed. An image of these two military men together formed in my mind and I wanted to capture this history in my painting.
Staff Sergeant Philip Sullivan flew thirty-three missions in 1944 as a B-17 Flying Fortress tail gunner with the 388th Bombardment Group of the 8th Air Force from USAAF Station Knettishall in East Anglia, England.
While stationed at Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota, Staff Sergeant Daniel Sullivan was deployed to Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan in the spring of 2014. While serving in Afghanistan, he was a member of the 451st Expeditionary Logistics Readiness Squadron as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
